The H-21 Shawnee is famous for its nickname “flying banana,” which originates from the distinctive fuselage curved upward at the rear. Indeed, the fuselage designed in this original way have enabled the adoption of the two powerful rotors with large propellers. The two rotors and the strong aerodynamic structure made the H-21 a true workhorse capable of carrying out the most demanding transport missions in often difficult environments. Widely used by the U.S. Army since the first half of the 1950s, it has also been employed by the U.S. Army in the Vietnamese theater of operations for troop transport and tactical material transport since 1961. “Gunship” versions armed with guns under the nose or installed in the side door area were made to employ the helicopter, which proved to be robust and reliable overall, also for ground troop support missions. It was also employed, armed with an MG 151 gun on the right hatch and a .30-caliber weapon on the left side, by French troops in Algeria

El H-21 Shawnee es famoso por su apodo de «plátano volador», que tiene su origen en el fuselaje distintivo curvado hacia arriba en la parte trasera. De hecho, el fuselaje diseñado de esta forma tan original ha permitido la adopción de los dos potentes rotores con grandes hélices. Los dos rotores y la fuerte estructura aerodinámica hicieron del H-21 un verdadero caballo de batalla capaz de llevar a cabo las misiones de transporte más exigentes en entornos a menudo difíciles. Ampliamente utilizado por el ejército estadounidense desde la primera mitad de la década de 1950, también lo empleó en el teatro de operaciones vietnamita para el transporte de tropas y material táctico desde 1961. Se hicieron versiones «Gunship» armadas con cañones bajo el morro o instalados en la zona de las puertas laterales para emplear el helicóptero, que demostró ser robusto y fiable en general, también para misiones de apoyo a tropas terrestres. También fue empleado, armado con un cañón MG 151 en la escotilla derecha y un arma del calibre .30 en el lado izquierdo, por las tropas francesas en Argelia
