The origin of the Spanish Tercios as such dates back to the reign of Charles I in 1534 and represents the culmination of a military renewal initiated some time before by the Catholic Monarchs under the command of the Great Captain.

The Spanish Tercios were from their birth and for almost two centuries, the most lethal infantry in Europe.

Their fearsome efficiency derived from an exceptional combination of firearms (arquebus and musket) with the pike and the sword, which was a true revolution in the military tactics used up to that time.

There was no uniformity for the soldiers and each one was equipped according to his tastes and what he liked, according to their tastes and what their economy allowed them, normally following the fashions of the time.

They incorporated handkerchiefs, ribbons or a colored sash to distinguish themselves from their enemies in battle.

El origen de los Tercios españoles como tal, se remonta al reinado de Carlos I en 1534 y supone la culminación de una renovación militar iniciada tiempo atrás por los Reyes Católicos bajo el mando del Gran Capitán.

Los Tercios españoles fueron desde su nacimiento y durante casi dos siglos, la Infantería más letal de Europa.

Su temible eficacia derivaba de una excepcional combinación de armas de fuego (arcabuz y mosquete) con la pica y la espada, lo que supuso una auténtica revolución en las tácticas militares empleadas hasta la época.

No existía una uniformidad propia para los soldados y cada uno se equipaba según sus gustos y lo que su economía le permitiese, normalmente siguiendo las modas propias de la época.

Incorporaban a su indumentaria pañuelos, lazos o un fajín de color para distinguirse en la batalla de sus enemigos.

Alabama spark the American Civil War, The Montgomery Convention marked the formal beginning of the Confederate States of America, as the birthplace of the Confederacy, invited other states to form a Southern Republic during 1861.

Alabama provided a significant source of troops and leaders, military materiel, supplies, food, horses and mules.

On the southern coast, Alabama’s ports remained open for nearly 4 years using blockade runners, until the loose of the battles of Mobile Bay and Fort Blakeley forced to surrender the last major Confederate port.

Alabama soldiers fought in hundreds of battles; only at Gettysburg the casualties rose until 1,750 dead. A total of 35,000 died during the war.The Southern soldiers came from different states and enlisted to fight against the Northern Army.

Alabama provide multitude of regiments, including artillery, infantry and cavalry. Among them were a number of volunteers from the militia who joined these regiments.

The vignette depicts two of these volunteer soldiers from different companies enjoying rest time, playing music and drinking whisky, there were one of their main forms of relaxation.

Alabama fue fundamental para la Guerra Civil Americana, con la convención de secesión en Montgomery, lugar de nacimiento de la Confederación, invitando a otros estados a formar una República del Sur, durante 1861.

Alabama proporcionó una fuente significativa de tropas y líderes, material militar, suministros, alimentos, caballos y mulas.

En la costa sur, los puertos de Alabama permanecieron abiertos durante casi 4 años utilizando evasores de bloqueo naval, hasta que la batallas perdidas de Mobile Bay y Fort Blakeley obligaron a rendir el último gran puerto confederado.

Los soldados de Alabama lucharon en cientos de batallas; solo las pérdidas en Gettysburg fueron de 1.750 muertos. Siendo un total de 35.000 los que murieron en la guerra.

Los soldados sudistas durante la guerra civil americana procedían de diferentes estados y se alistaban para luchar contra el ejercito del norte.

Alabama, contaba con multitud de regimientos, tanto de artillería, infantería y caballería. Entre ellos se contaban varios de voluntarios, procedentes de milicias y que se englobaron en estos regimientos.

La viñeta representa a dos de estos soldados voluntarios de diferentes compañías, disfrutando de un tiempo de descanso, en el que tocar música y beber whisky era uno de sus principales desahogos.

The men enlisted in militia was recruited from the counties in which they lived, as the Claiborne Guards was born in Alabama in 1861.

This regiment wore a classic Confederate grey uniform with dark blue cuffs and collars, and the flag motto was “Citizen Soldier, Liberty’s Shield”.

This company became part of the 2nd Alabama Volunteers in 1862.

Several of the original members of this company rose to become senior officers and were highly esteemed soldiers among the rest of the fighting men.

Los hombres se alistaban en compañías de milicianos reclutadas en los condados donde vivían, de este modo nació la Guardia Claiborne, en Alabama en 1861.

Este regimiento lucía un uniforme con el clásico color gris confederado con puños y cuellos en azul oscuro y el lema de su bandera era “Soldado ciudadano, escudo de la libertad”.

Esta compañía pasó a formar parte del 2ºRgto de Voluntarios de Alabama en 1862.

De esta compañía lograron llegar a altos oficiales varios de sus iniciales integrantes, siendo soldados muy apreciados entre el resto de combatientes.

The Raccoon Roughs were a mountain company who, under the command of General John B. Gordon, were incorporated into the 6th Alabama Volunteers.

They didn´t have uniforms neither two dressed alike, recognisable only by their coonskin-decorated caps, origin o the company’s name.

They were rough and fierce fighters until the end of the American Civil War.

Los Raccoon Roughs, fueron inicialmente una compañía de montañeros que al mando del General John B. Gordon se incorporaron en el 6º Rgto de los Voluntarios de Alabama.

No tenían uniformes y no había dos vistiendo igual, solo se reconocían por sus casquetes decorados con pieles de mapache, de ahí el nombre de la compañía.

Fueron rudos y fieros combatientes hasta el final de la guerra civil americana.
