5Bristol Beaufort Mk.IA with RAF pilots
The Bristol Beaufort torpedo bomber began to arrive at the RAF Coastal Command in late 1939, and the following spring they began to see combat. The aircraft carried out aerial mining of sea harbors, conducted day and night torpedo attacks, and bombed coastal targets. In the course of its operation, the Bristol Beaufort was improved, its armament and equipment changed. The Mk.IA modification received a new machine-gun turret, and ASV radars were installed on the torpedo battleship to search for ships. One of the areas of combat service of this aircraft was the Mediterranean Sea, where the targets were transport convoys and warships of the Axis countries. It should be noted that service on torpedo battleships was extremely difficult and dangerous, and in some periods of the war, losses among their crews were the highest in the entire Royal Air Force. However, despite all the difficulties, torpedo bomber pilots were able to carry out a significant number of successful attacks on enemy ships.

To provide hot meals to Wehrmacht soldiers in the field, company kitchens were set up to prepare meals. Qualified cooks were in charge of these issues, who also used the services of assistants. The cooked food was distributed either directly into soldiers’ pots or into special large thermoses (for delivery to units located at a certain distance from the kitchen). The Wehrmacht used field kitchens of several types: large kitchens for cooking for the number of soldiers from 125 to 225, or smaller kitchens for 60 to 125 people. They were transported either on a trailer behind cars or by a team of horses. They were also installed in the backs of trucks, such as the French-made AHN trucks in the Wehrmacht’s numerous fleet. Soldiers’ humour gave the field kitchens the name ‘Gulaschkanone’ (‘Goulash Cannon’).

The Sd.Kfz.251 semi-tracked armoured personnel carrier was the main armoured vehicle of the Wehrmacht. It was designed by Hanomag in 1938 and mass production started the following summer. The armoured personnel carriers were in service with the German army throughout the Second World War and were used in all theatres of operations, with a total quantity of 15,252 vehicles of various series and modifications. The first modification, the Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.A, was produced in 1939-1940. One of the versions was the Sd.Kfz.251/8 for evacuating the wounded from the battlefield. It could carry a different number of wounded, for example, two lying on a stretcher and four sitting. The stretchers were suspended on special mounts, and semicircular rails for an awning were installed on top of the body to protect it from the rain. The equipment of the transporter also included a drinking water tank, and an additional step was installed at the rear to facilitate boarding the transport compartment. Usually, armoured medical transporters were part of Stabskompanie. To distinguish them from other vehicles, they had large signs with a red medical cross on their bodies.

5RAF Pilots in Tropical Uniforms
(1941-1945)
On the eve of the Second World War, the Royal Air Force was organizationally divided into Nome Command and Overseas Command. The Overseas Command, in turn, included the Air Forces of the Middle East, Palestine, Transjordan, Iraq, Aden, the Mediterranean, India, the Far East, as well as wings in Egypt and Sudan. The hot climate zones required a uniform adapted to the climate, which was light khaki in colour. Also, during combat operations in the desert, pilots and ground staff wore a combination of khaki and the traditional RAF grey and blue. Service in hot climates was difficult: heat, sandstorms, and problems with clean water made living conditions much more difficult. However, even in such difficult conditions, the British pilots performed their service selflessly. In heavy fighter battles in the air and dedicated torpedo attacks at sea, the RAF pilots proved their qualifications as resilient, disciplined and experienced fighters.

5Pilotos de la RAF con uniformes tropicales
(1941-1945)

The OV-10D+ attack and observation aircraft is a version of the OV-10A Bronco. The modification was carried out at the Naval Aviation Refurbishment Centre (NARF). The changes affected the engine, avionics, communications systems, airframe and cockpit equipment. One of the features of this modification was the installation of a new FLIR infrared system under the extended nose section, which also housed laser target designators. The tail beams were fitted with devices to protect against surface-to-air missiles. The advanced capabilities of the aircraft made it possible to perform a wide range of tasks, including ground target surveillance and guidance of attack aircraft, both during the day and at night. At the same time, the aircraft retained the function of an attack aircraft and could strike ground targets if necessary. OV-IOD+ aircraft were used by the US Marine Corps in Operation DESERT STORM in 1991.

Japanese Heavy Bomber
The Ki-21 pre-production bomber made its first flight in late 1936. Serial production of its first modification, the Ki-21-Ia, began in 1938, the same year the aircraft made its combat debut. Air units of the Imperial Japanese Army, which were equipped with the Ki-21-Ia, were involved in active combat operations in China. In the spring of 1939, the Ki-21-Ia took part in combat operations against the Red Army on the Halhin Gol River. The aircraft’s combat payload of 1,000 kg was a good indicator of its time and allowed for massive bombing strikes, and the defensive tactics developed by the pilots of these bombers in air battles resulted in their fairly low losses compared to other types of aircraft. After more advanced models were produced, the first modification bombers were transferred to training units, although a certain number of Ki-21-Ia continued to be operated by combat units. American pilots, who gave Japanese aircraft their own names, referred to Ki-21 bombers as ‘Sally’

The Civil War of 1861-1865 is rightly considered a turning point in the history of the United States of America. It was the beginning of establishing the United States as a state that has influenced and still influences world politics. This war is also considered to be in some ways unique and unlike any other civil war – it had features of both an internal war and a war between states. It was not just a clash between two differently equipped and trained armies – it was a kind of clash of civilizations. The mutual cruelty of the two warring parties, who had previously been citizens of the same state, reached unimaginable levels. As a result, the Civil War became the bloodiest military conflict for the United States in the country’s history, with 650,000 Americans killed, according to historians. No wonder the famous American historian Shelby Foote described it: “…It was the crossroads of our existence, and it was a hell of a crossroads”.

In the early 1930s, biplanes of various types and purposes formed the basis of the air forces of many countries. They had their advantages, including good stability in the air, high maneuverability, and reliability. This allowed many of them to remain in service with the air forces during the 1930s and 1940s. They also took an active part in the fighting of World War II. The Japanese Imperial Army’s Ki-10 fighter was one of the best biplane fighters of its time, and during WWII, it was used in training aviation units. The U-2 aircraft was one of the most mass-produced and famous aircraft in the history of world aviation; the U-2VS modification was effectively used as a light night bomber. The Heinkel He 51 biplane became the first production fighter of the German Luftwaffe. The prototype aircraft made its first flight in the summer of 1933, and in 1935, mass production began. On the eve of WWII, these aircraft were transferred to training units.

US Attack Aircraft
In 1963, the United States announced a competition to develop an airplane for use in limited military conflicts. Its main tasks were to strike ground targets, provide direct air support to its troops, and provide forward surveillance and guidance. The winner of the competition in August 1964 was the project of North America, which was designated OV-10A and given the name Bronco in the armed forces. Combat testing of the aircraft in Vietnam began in the summer of 1968. The aircraft were used very intensively, thanks to their ability to be based on unprepared unpaved airfields and the short time required for re-flight. If necessary, these attack aircraft were able to appear over targets 15 minutes after receiving a request from ground units, and this distinguished them from jet combat aircraft. During combat missions, the OV-10As demonstrated high efficiency and good combat survivability, becoming a kind of benchmark for anti-guerrilla attack aircraft. The OV-10A Bronco’s combat operations continued after the end of the Vietnam War, and these aircraft were successfully used by air forces around the world.

261OV-10А Bronco

MiG-29 “9-13” Ukrainian Fighter with HARM missiles
In the summer of 2022, the media reported cases of combat use of air-launched AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles from Ukrainian MiG-29 fighters. Despite doubts, it turned out to be true. This was confirmed by video footage that was later published on the Internet. Thus, the engineers managed to solve the seemingly impossible task of integrating the AGM-88 HARM missile into the MiG-29 avionics system, making these fighters “Radar Hunters”.
The HARM missile, developed by Alliant Techsystems, was adopted by the US Air Force in 1983. It can engage both continuous and pulsed radars operating in frequency hopping modes. The missile uses a two-channel mono-pulse homing warhead, with a 66kg high explosive warhead. The HARM missile is in service with the military aviation of many countries, including Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Greece and the Republic of Korea.ESCALA
