  • Storming the bombers. A Chronicle of JG 4 Vol. 1 1942-1944

    Sold out

    LUGA JG 4/I

    49,90

The fourth fighter wing of the Luftwaffe was initially established during 1942 and committed to operations in defence of the Rumanian oil fields during 1943. I./JG 4 first saw action in combat against a strike force of B-24 Liberators dispatched on the celebrated low level attack against Ploesti on 1 August 1943, Operation “Tidal Wave”. JG 4 was subsequently deployed in the bitterly fought German defensive campaign on the Italian peninsula during the first half of 1944, prior to being shifted to the Normandy invasion front and then falling back to the frontiers of the Reich in September that year. It was during the summer of 1944 that JG 4 underwent considerable reinforcement with two new Gruppen swelling its ranks. The most effective of these was II. (Sturm)/JG 4, a so-called “Storm” or « assault » wing, built up around a hard core of former Sturmstaffel 1 pilots and an intake of young daredevil volunteers. Committed against the massive USAF bomber fleets pounding the Reich, these German « kamikaze » fighters, as some saw them, were deployed to bring down the American bombers by any means, including ramming if necessary. The first volume of this two part history covers the unit’s establishment, deployments and combat actions through to Autumn 1944, providing for the first time in English a day-by-day, mission-by-mission study of the Luftwaffe’s 4th fighter wing.

The second volume covers the story of the Geschwader from Operation Market Garden in Holland during September 1944 to the final desperate battles over Berlin and capitulation in May 1945. The combats flown by the pilots of JG 4 throughout this nine month period are related with the aid of rare oral testimony and illustrated with photographs from private albums, including a selection of new images for this English-language edition. Covered in detail are the ‘Storm’ missions flown by the Sturmgruppe (including ramming attacks against USAAF bombers), ground-attack bombing sorties during the Ardennes offensive of December 1944, the fullest account yet of the unit’s participation in the 1945 New Year’s Day Operation Bodenplatte, the last desperate sorties flown on the Oder front against the Red Army with, for the first time, accounts in English of German kamikaze attacks flown against the Oder bridges and the final air battles over the ruins of Berlin.

Over the course of 20 years research the author was able to track down and interview virtually every surviving pilot and compile their very often moving and desperate accounts into this book, giving it a uniquely human dimension which will undoubtedly be of interest to all former Allied aviators and their descendants as well as enthusiasts of the period.

Neil Page has produced the translation and his knowledge of both the French and German languages as well as WWII aviation history has enabled us to present this superb English language edition. The work is illustrated with several hundred photographs and is completed with loss and victory listings, a table of commanding officers and Thierry Dekker’s superb full-colour profile artworks. This is an unmissable 232-page A-4 format hardback, with much new information on WWII air combat over Europe, the pilots and their machines.

  • In the Skies of France. A Chronicle of JG 2

    LUGA JG 2/I

    49,90

It has taken more than 60 years for this first detailed history of the second fighter wing of the Luftwaffe to appear, a chronicle of Jagdgeschwader 2. Conducting operations principally over France and the Channel, JG 2 was destined to become one of the most celebrated of German fighter units, accorded extensive coverage by the propaganda services of the Reich. Awarded the honour title « Richthofen » as early as 1935, JG 2 spearheaded the campaign in the West and the assault againt England in the Battle of Britain. The unit remained in France when the majority of German fighter units were dispatched eastwards for the invasion of Russia during the spring of 1941. Tasked with defending the airspace of Brittany, Normandy and much of Picardy along the French Channel coastline, JG 2 constituted a bulwark against the incursions of the RAF and USAF. Despite the unit’s heavy losses sustained during WW II, the authors managed to locate around one hundred JG 2 veterans and their personal accounts and photographs bring this history vividly to life and imbue it with a human dimension which many will find moving. This first volume of the history of JG 2 covers the early years of the unit from its origins to the turn of the year 1940/1941.
Compiling a history of this scope would have been an impossible task were it not for the support of many tens of veterans and their families, amateur historians, enthusiasts and friends. We owe a special debt of gratitude to five former members of JG “Richthofen” who were particularly supportive during the long process of assembling this work and whose encouragement and readiness to assist was unswerving: Julius Meimberg and Erich Rudorffer for kindly agreeing to write their respective forewords, Hennig Strümpell, Wolfgang Falck and Dr Siegfried Bethke. It was with great sadness that we learnt of the deaths of the latter three gentlemen before this work could appear.

A number of French researchers have supported this project with their time, energy and considerable knowledge and experience. We would particularly like to thank Richard Goyat and his co-author Jean-Yves Lorant, as well as Frédéric Quesnel.

From Bessarabia to Belgrade: An Illustrated Study of the Soviet Conquest of Southeast Europe, March-October 1944

The Red Army reached northeastern Rumania in the last days of March 1944. Stalin had high hopes that the 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts would be able to quickly conquer the Balkans. But those hopes were not to be fulfilled. Bulgarian researcher Kamen Nevenkin’s From Bessarabia to Belgrade covers the military history of the bloody fights in southeastern Europe from March to October 1944. This is a short study, illustrated with numerous never-before-published wartime photographs.

Bloody Vienna: The Soviet Offensive Operations in Western Hungary and Austria, March-May 1945 book.

The Soviet Vienna Operation began on 16 March 1945 when the assault armies of 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts succeeded in penetrating the Axis defence between Esztergom and Lake Balaton. It ended less than a month later, on 13 April 1945, when all its objectives were achieved, and Vienna was taken.

The defeat at Vienna inflicted a mortal blow on the Nazi economy – the Third Reich lost its important economic regions in Hungary and Eastern Austria that were still largely untouched by the war.

Finally, the victory at Vienna allowed Stalin to solidify his presence in Central and Eastern Europe and legitimize his absolute dominance over the region. The Western Allies and the small democratic countries of Western Europe were forced to realize that the Red Army wouldn’t fall back and return to its homeland, but would stay and erect an iron curtain behind which communist regimes would be installed. Thus, the Soviet Empire expanded to the west, and Europe was divided for the next 45 years.

Penned by a leading Bulgarian researcher, the book provides an expert analysis of this battle. A considerable number of German and Soviet wartime documents were accessed, and this allowed the author to tell the story from the perspective of both sides. It also contains many never-before-published photographs.

  • Last Panzer Battles in Hungary: Spring 1945

    PZW9786155583292

    49,95
    ENGLISH

In the last phase of the Second World War the Sixth Panzer Army was the last army available to the German military leadership which was more or less intact and was capable of launching a major offensive. After it had been withdrawn from the Western front in the aftermath of the failed Ardennes counter offensive, it was replenished with men and gears as fully as was possible in the given circumstances, and as a result it almost regained its 1944 autumn strength. It would not have been a surprise if it had been deployed on German territory against the Allied troops advancing to Rhine, or in Silesia or in the Baltics or even if it had been sent as a reinforcement to the Army Group Vistula to defend the distant approaches to Berlin against the advancing Soviet army – reinforcement and fresh troops capable of launching counter offensives were desperately needed everywhere. But it happened otherwise: the Sixth Army was deployed in Hungary and participated in the Operation Spring Awakening, launched in the western part of the country on 6th of March, 1945. This was the last German “big offensive” in the course of the Second World War.

The struggle for the Hungarian capital in 1944-45, like the battle fought in the bend of the River Don, left an indelible scar on the collective memory of the Hungarian people.Although this topic has been discussed by several authors, using various approaches, no genuinely comprehensive account based on a balanced study of relevant archival sources of the opposing sides has been published on the military history of the battle fought within the territory of Budapest.Bulgarian researcher Kamen Nevenkins Fortress Budapest covers the military history of Operation Budapest.

    Red Machines 2: SU-100 Self-Propelled Gun book

The Red Machines Series is devoted to the hardware of the Red Army. Each book offers in-depth information, much of it new to the west, as well as a large number of photos, of which most are unpublished. Each book includes blueprints, drawings, colour profiles and data tables, to describe the development and production variants of each vehicle.

The SU-100 was the Red Army’s most powerful medium tank destroyer of World War 2 and was developed for anti-tank fire support to the T-34-85 in the same way as the SU-85 had complemented the original T-34. As with the SU-85 before it, the SU-100 was delayed in entering service.

Although introduced late in the war, the SU-100 was heavily engaged in the final push into the Axis countries, with major combat engagements in Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and in the assault on Berlin. The SU-100 proved a particularly potent “Zveroboi” or “animal hunter” in that it could easily dispatch Tiger, King Tiger and Panther tanks at medium range. The vehicle had no secondary armament, however, and proved vulnerable when engaged in close fighting without infantry support as occurred during some of these late war battles.

Post-war, the SU-100 remained in Soviet Army service for many years, being subject to several capital repair upgrades over the decades. The SU-100 was also exported in large numbers, particularly to the Middle East, and was produced under licence in Czechoslovakia as the SD-100.

    About the Authors

James Kinnear was born in the UK in 1959. James has researched Russian military hardware following his first visit to the Soviet Union in 1973. Since then he has written hundreds of articles on Soviet and Russian military technology. A Russian speaker, he has studied the subject from within the military-intelligence community and as a civilian author.

Nikolai Polikarpov is the chief editor of “M-Hobby”, the first and only Russian monthly magazine for military modellers, which has been in publication since 1993. The founding of the magazine was a natural extension of his hobby of building scale models. The desire to build models which were an exact replica of the original full-scale prototypes naturally led to the study of the development and operational history of military vehicles during World War Two, including archive research and the measurement of preserved museums examples. This led to the publication of numerous reference articles in “M-Hobby”, and also a series of Russian books and monographs regarding the history of Soviet combat and transport vehicles. The publishing of books and articles led to membership of the Union of Journalists of Russia and ongoing work in popularizing military history in various publications.

    ENGLISH

English / Spanish. 128 pages. Hard cover.

During the Great War, the assault tanks in the German Army merely played an anecdotal role. Due to the restrictions enforced by the Treaty of Versailles, the first training unit for armoured forces wasn’t organised (secretly) until 1933. The existence of the first three Panzerdivisionen of that new German Army was officially revealed in 1935. The armoured troops or Panzertruppen were an independent branch of the Army, with their own command. This allowed concentrating the tanks in divisions so units were capable of significantly strategic deployments. General Heinz Guderian forged both words: Panzerwaffe to refer to the armoured force and
Panzertruppen to identify the elitist armoured troops which would conquer half of Europe in the following years.
The evolution of the camouflage schemes painted in tanks and vehicles of German armoured units is analysed in the book along with the organisation of these German units during WWI and WWII and the whole interwar period.

In the Six Day War, some 860 enemy tanks were captured by the IDF, including some 280 T-54/5 tanks. Within a few years, 146 of them were introduced into service as Tiran 4/5. This book tells their story, a story of the only army that introduced a great number of enemy tanks into prolonged service. The Tiran tank did not really suit the IDF’s needs. It was in many ways a bastard tank. However, the IDF creatively tried to take advantage of all that it had to offer. It was used like no other tank—as a low-grade “bonus” reserve tank unit for wartime, as a mine-clearing tank, as a unique tool for special operations, and as an artillery cannon designated for destroying SA-3 anti-air missile batteries. After many alterations, the tanks were eventually incorporated in a Tiran 4/5 brigade, as part of a special tactical task force designed to conduct an armored maneuver in the Egyptian flank.Abteilung 502 and Desert Eagle Publishing bring us the second volume of the Captured Vehicles in IDF Service Series. A new series for those who build models, love tanks and like history. The series focuses on the widespread and unique use the IDF made of tanks and armored vehicles captured in Israel’s wars with its Arab neighbors. The series is based on academic research, official IDF documentation, and interviews conducted with soldiers and officers who used these vehicles in real time. An amazing book that will surprise you.

Years of painstaking research and a network of like-minded researchers from across the globe have enabled the authors to piece together the who, where and why, including lists of wrecks documented by the military government in the immediate post-war period.

  • SPECIAL Luftwaffe Gallery 4 – JG 5 ‘Fighters of the Midnight Sun’

    LUGA JG 5

    29,95

    Authors: Erik Mombeeck, Maciej Góralczyk

This new volume is devoted to JG 5 ‘Fighters of the Midnight Sun’. Nothing predestined young German fighter pilots to fly and fight among the grandiose landscapes of Norway, Finland or Lapland with their hostile climates. Many of them would find their last resting places in the storm-tossed icy waters of the Arctic Sea or the snow-covered plains of the tundra. Who even now knows that the defeat of the Wehrmacht was precipitated by the failure to conquer Europe’s northern-most small territory?

This latest Luftwaffe Gallery ‘special issue’ tells the story of this fighter Geschwader and its numerous aces on 96 pages, filled with rare and newly translated first person accounts, over 240 photos (many previously unpublished) and 32 specially commissioned artworks that had been created by Janusz Światłoń.

  • SPECIAL Luftwaffe Gallery 3 – JG 54 ‘The Green Hearts’

    LUGA JG 54

    29,95

    Authors: Erik Mombeeck, Maciej Góralczyk

JG 54 was perhaps the most fascinating fighter Geschwader of the Luftwaffe, not least for modellers. This is in large measure due to the variety of non-standard colour schemes worn by the unit’s Bf 109 and Fw 190 fighters as well as the diversity of its emblems and insignia displayed both early and late in the war.

On 96 pages of this latest Luftwaffe Gallery ‘special issue’ we highlight the story of this fighter Geschwader through rare and newly translated first person accounts, 207 photos of which many are published for the first time, and 32 specially commissioned profiles that had been created by Thierry Dekker.

  • SPECIAL Luftwaffe Gallery 2 – JG 77 ‘Fighting on Every Front’

    LUGA JG 77

    29,95

    Author: Erik Mombeeck

Several factors characterise the history of JG 77: the diversity of its origins, the fact that the Geschwader fought on all fronts, flying the Messerschmitt Bf 109 throughout (except for a very brief interlude on Macchi 205), the striking number and quality of its insignia and the fact that it had in its ranks a large number of the leading fighter aces.

Through newly translated personal accounts, over 230 photos and 31 colour profiles, we tell the story of this unit on 96 pages of this ‘special issue’ of Luftwaffe Gallery.

  • SPECIAL Luftwaffe Gallery 1 – JG 26 ‘The Abbeville Boys’

    LUGA JG 26

    29,95

    Author: Erik Mombeeck

In the Luftwaffe Gallery series, this expanded special edition is devoted to JG 26, the famed ‘Abbeville Boys’ or ‘Abbeville Kids’ of RAF and USAAF legend. This superb new title provides an unparalleled view of air combat in the skies of Britain and France, from dog-fighting between Messerschmitts and Spitfires during the campaign in the West and the Battle of Britain, to fighter bomber missions over southern England, to the Allied invasion of Normandy and the desperate sorties flown by the unit’s Fw 190s against the huge USAAF bomber streams.

On 96 pages, you’ll find 28 superb colour profiles created by Thierry Dekker, over 240 photographs and newly translated personal accounts.

Fallen Stars 1 – Crashed, Damaged and Captured Aircraft of the USAAF

Fallen Stars 1 is the first in the new Aircraft Pictorial Series from Canfora Design & Publishing. This series showcases high-quality photos of crashed, damaged and captured US, German, Japanese, British, Soviet and French aircraft. This first volume focusses on the USAAF. The most challenging task in developing this series was selecting images for the first book. There were many outstanding photos to choose from, and ‘competition’ for placement grew fierce. The result is an excellent visual reference for aviation historians, modellers, and WWII aircraft enthusiasts. All of the classic USAAF fighters and bombers are reproduced.

The photos speak for themselves, and the publisher does not let extraneous text get in their way, apart from short but enlightening captions. The reader’s ability to spot details never ceases to amaze and based on the photo interpretation skills of the global audience; we suspect that you will have a lot of fun analysing this collection of images of distressed US Army Air Force aircraft in World War II.

Fallen Stars 1 will be followed by reprints of Tom’s previous Grounded Eagles 1 & 2, in addition to a new volume 3 on German aircraft. Setting Suns on Japanese aircraft will also be reprinted under the new series label and a volume on early war aircraft.

Illustrated study of the vehicles designed, developed and produced at the M·A·N plant in Nürnberg during the period 1934-1945. Although the production of trucks was, and remains, an essential factor in the company’s success, it was M·A·N’s experience designing armoured fighting vehicles during the ‘30s and early ‘40s that led to the Pz.Kpfw.V ‘Panther’ in 1942 for which it is most renowned during WWII.
