The record-breaking “Eldridge” car, fashioned from the old Fiat SB4 chassis, was nicknamed “Mephistopheles” because of the hellish noise emitted by its powerful 20,000-cfm-plus inline 6-cylinder aero engine that was not attenuated by the exhausts kept purposely free for maximum performance . The “Mephistopheles” was propelled, on July 12, 1924, at Arpajon, France, by its driver and designer Ernest Eldrige, to the extraordinary speed, for the time, of 146.01 miles per hour (over 230 km/h) and won the world road speed record over the flying kilometer. The Mephistopheles was characterized by its long front hood, capable of holding the mighty water-cooled Fiat A 12-in-line engine, and by its structure made specifically for the achievement of the “record.”

El coche récord «Eldridge», fabricado a partir del antiguo chasis del Fiat SB4, recibió el apodo de «Mefistófeles» por el infernal ruido que emitía su potente motor de 6 cilindros en línea aerodinámico y más de 20.000 cfm, que no era atenuado por los escapes mantenidos deliberadamente libres para obtener el máximo rendimiento . El «Mefistófeles» fue propulsado el 12 de julio de 1924 en Arpajon, Francia, por su piloto y diseñador Ernest Eldrige, a la extraordinaria velocidad, para la época, de 146,01 millas por hora (más de 230 km/h) y ganó el récord mundial de velocidad en carretera sobre el kilómetro volante.
