The M48A2 Armored Vehicle Launched Bridge (AVLB) was used by the Bundeswehr from 1960 onwards in a quantity of approximately 100 units.
A hydraulic bridge system was mounted on the hull of the M48A2 main battle tank to attach the 19.2 meter long bridge.
For this purpose, the turret of the tank was removed and the opening to the fighting compartment was covered with a plate, which had two hatches for the driver and the commander.
The relocated bridge made it possible to safely cross trenches and small rivers up to 15 meters wide.
Until the introduction of the Leopard 1-based “Biber” armored bridging vehicle in 1974, the M48A2 was the standard bridging vehicle for armored engineer companies.
These proven vehicles remained in service with many armored engineer companies until the early 1990s.
