The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is one of the most famous fighters in aviation history and is also one of the longest-lived with an operational life that began in the late 1950s and ended, for some military aviations, in the mid-2000s. Unique aircraft in aerodynamic structure with its elongated fuselage and extremely small wing surfaces. Its structure made it ideal as an interceptor fighter capable of exceeding, thanks to the thrust of the General Electric J79 turbojet engine, Mach 2.2 with an extraordinary rate of climb to altitude. It was, however, poorly maneuverable and difficult to fly. The F-104G Starfighter was produced under license by several European aircraft manufacturers. It became, beginning in the mid-1960s, the interceptor fighter of choice for many NATO countries including Italy, Germany, Holland, Greece, and Turkey. The armament was basically that of the original versions with a 20 mm. Vulcan gun and the possibility of carrying air-to-air missiles, bombs, or additional tanks under the wings to increase its flight range. The traditional task of interceptor fighter was also joined by that of reconnaissance fighter. The F-104G was thus equipped with a dedicated external “Orpheus” reconnaissance pod that provided excellent operational results.

El Lockheed F-104 Starfighter es uno de los cazas más famosos de la historia de la aviación y también uno de los más longevos, con una vida operativa que comenzó a finales de la década de 1950 y terminó, para algunas aeronaves militares, a mediados de la década de 2000. Avión único en su estructura aerodinámica por su fuselaje alargado y sus superficies alares extremadamente pequeñas. Su estructura lo hacía ideal como caza interceptor capaz de superar, gracias al empuje del motor turborreactor General Electric J79, Mach 2,2 con una extraordinaria velocidad de ascenso a altitud. Sin embargo, era poco maniobrable y difícil de pilotar. El F-104G Starfighter fue producido bajo licencia por varios fabricantes de aviones europeos. A partir de mediados de la década de 1960, se convirtió en el caza interceptor preferido de muchos países de la OTAN, como Italia, Alemania, Holanda, Grecia y Turquía. El armamento era básicamente el de las versiones originales, con un cañón Vulcan de 20 mm. A la tarea tradicional de caza interceptor se unió también la de caza de reconocimiento.
