The Supermarine Spitfire fighter can be considered, without doubt, one of the most famous aircraft in aviation history and an icon of British aircraft production. A single-engine, low-wing aircraft with good offensive armament, it constituted, in its early versions, together with the Hawker Hurricane, the backbone of the Royal Air Force’s fighter units during the Battle of Britain against the German Luftwaffe. Victory in the Battle of Britain contributed to the Spitfire’s high prestige. It was characterised by its harmonious design, elliptical wing and powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Over the course of the war, in response to the technological innovations of its adversaries that led to the development of the formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190, the Spitfire was constantly evolved in its aerodynamic configuration and engines. As a result, the Spitfire Mk IX went into production and, thanks to its performance, was able to compete on equal terms against the most modern German fighters.

El caza Supermarine Spitfire puede considerarse, sin duda, uno de los aviones más famosos de la historia de la aviación y un icono de la producción aeronáutica británica. Monomotor, de ala baja y con un buen armamento ofensivo, constituyó, en sus primeras versiones, junto con el Hawker Hurricane la columna vertebral de las divisiones de cazas de la Royal Air Force durante la Batalla de Inglaterra contra la Luftwaffe alemana. La victoria en la Batalla de Inglaterra contribuyó al gran prestigio del Spitfire. Se caracterizaba, por su armonioso diseño, su ala elíptica y su potente motor Rolls-Royce Merlin. En el transcurso de la guerra, en respuesta a las innovaciones tecnológicas de los adversarios que llevaron al desarrollo del formidable Focke-Wulf Fw 190, el Spitfire fue constantemente evolucionado en configuración aerodinámica y motores. Así entró en producción el Spitfire Mk IX, que, por sus prestaciones, pudo competir en igualdad de condiciones con los cazas alemanes más modernos.
