    AFV Photo Album Vol.2

AFV Photo Album Vol.2 sees authors Marek Solar, Petr Dolezal and Vladimir Kos continue the journey through the Czechoslovakia, where a large number of vehicles were knocked out, blown-up or just left behind by retreating German forces during the final weeks of World War 2. Among them were also vast amounts of Red Army machines, knocked out in the tank battles that raged along the retreat route. Few historians and modellers know the full facts about the units and their hardware, which were involved in the final battles of the war. Many of the places covered in Volume 1 are revisited, revealing new facts and in many cases unpublished photos to illustrate the journey, accompanied by highly detailed captions.

The book will take a closer look at what happened to the vehicles after the war when they were systematically collected and transported to the melting plants. King Tigers, Panthers, Pz.IVs, StuGs. Hetzers, SPWs, T-34s and IS-2s were among them, as well as more rarely seen vehicles such as Möbelwagens, Marders and Panzer IV L/70(A)s. A few of the surviving vehicles that went on to serve in the post-war period.

This work is aimed at the modeller and historian alike and although mainly a photographic examination, detailed accounts of the units’ strength, and details about vehicle production variants are also included. Modellers will also benefit from the highly realistic colour profiles, printed in large format.

The Complete Guide to Truck Modelling book

For decades, truck modelling has been something of a sub-group, with very little literature to rely on and to call their own. This book remedies that and opens up a new world, hopefully to modellers new to the truck scene, and veterans alike.

Building truck kits is simply different to other subjects and it needs a special approach in terms of adding missing details and authenticity. Therefore, it is not just about painting and assembly but closely related to real vehicles, their design and function. Paints, tools and airbrush techniques can be found in many books. This work however, is dedicated purely to trucks and their scale replicas, providing all the information one needs.

The book aims to provide all the information necessary to complete an authentically detailed truck model. It provides five separate building chapters, each focused on different levels of information, starting with rather basic assembly of modern US tractors and slowly increasing with difficulty via a detailed modern European truck to a heavily modified classic European tractor. In addition there are chapters focused on related topics, such as light commercial vehicles and resin conversions. The book ends with a lavish gallery of models, providing a wealth of inspiration.

The Red Army on Parade 1917-1945

The Red Army on Parade 1917-1945 is, without doubt, the publisher’s most ambitious project to date. This first volume describes the tanks and armoured vehicles paraded by the Red Army on Red Square from the first anniversary of the Russian Revolution in November 1918 until the end of the war in 1945. From the first captured French and British tanks displayed on Red Square, via the first Soviet KS tank to the T-34, KV and IS tanks, the book describes the first public appearance of all Red Army tanks and military vehicles displayed on Red Square and the background philosophy involved in their development.

This is a high-quality book with excellent image reproduction and useful information.

    Did you know?

For 100 years since the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Soviet Union and now the Russian Federation, has shown its latest tanks and military vehicles on Red Square for domestic and foreign consumption.
The November 1940 and May 1941 Red Square military parades were deliberately altered so as to not display the latest Soviet tanks to foreign military observers, as the Soviet Union prepared for total war.
The November 1941 Red Square parade was conducted under the auspices of a military operation rather than a ceremonial parade, at a time when Wehrmacht tanks were within 16 kilometres of the Kremlin. The tanks on parade carried a full ammunition load and were sent directly to the front line after the parade.
The November 1941 parade was staged twice, once at dawn to avoid potential air attack and a repeat performance in daylight for the press.
The June 1945 Victory in Europe Parade was one of the largest parades held on Red Square.
Victory over Japan parades were held in the Soviet Far East in September 1945. These parades featured tanks recently in combat.

Fallen Stars 1 – Crashed, Damaged and Captured Aircraft of the USAAF

Fallen Stars 1 is the first in the new Aircraft Pictorial Series from Canfora Design & Publishing. This series showcases high-quality photos of crashed, damaged and captured US, German, Japanese, British, Soviet and French aircraft. This first volume focusses on the USAAF. The most challenging task in developing this series was selecting images for the first book. There were many outstanding photos to choose from, and ‘competition’ for placement grew fierce. The result is an excellent visual reference for aviation historians, modellers, and WWII aircraft enthusiasts. All of the classic USAAF fighters and bombers are reproduced.

The photos speak for themselves, and the publisher does not let extraneous text get in their way, apart from short but enlightening captions. The reader’s ability to spot details never ceases to amaze and based on the photo interpretation skills of the global audience; we suspect that you will have a lot of fun analysing this collection of images of distressed US Army Air Force aircraft in World War II.

Fallen Stars 1 will be followed by reprints of Tom’s previous Grounded Eagles 1 & 2, in addition to a new volume 3 on German aircraft. Setting Suns on Japanese aircraft will also be reprinted under the new series label and a volume on early war aircraft.

T-14 Armata Main Battle Tank book

Russian armour guru James Kinnear looks at Russia’s revolutionary new T-14 main battle tank. Packed with 150 full-colour photos over 80 landscape pages, this is a must-have reference for modern armour modellers and covers the T-14’s design, development and features full walk-around photographic coverage. The perfect companion if you are building Takom or Zvezda kits!

The T-14 ‘Armata’ Main Battle Tank (MBT) made its public debut in May 2015, at a time of renewed tensions between Russia and the United States and its NATO allies. The appearance of the T-14 ‘Armata’ was for Western observers as much a revelation as the IS-3 heavy tank that made a shock appearance in the Victory Parade in Berlin in September 1945. After years of making do with updating Soviet-era tanks, the T-14 ‘Armata’ is the first genuinely new post-Soviet Russian design.

The T-14 is technically sophisticated and the first with a fully automated turret entirely devoid of a crew as one of many new design features. However, the tank is however expensive to build and maintain compared to the T-90 and T-72B3 MBT types and requires significant crew training compared with other tank types.

The ‘Armata’ is a showpiece of military engineering, but the upgrade of earlier T-72, T-80 and T-90 tanks is now being pursued in parallel as a more cost-effective solution for everyday needs. Whether the development T-14 ‘Armata’ will become a series, albeit limited production tank, or remain a technical showpiece has yet to be seen, but there is no doubt that it has made the impression it was intended to

The Soviet Army on Parade 1946-1991

The Soviet Army on Parade 1946-1991 is author James Kinnear’s sequel to the widely acclaimed The Red Army on Parade 1917-1945.

Canfora’s most ambitious project to date, the second in three-volume series describes the tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery and rocket systems paraded by the Soviet Army on Red Square from 1946 until the last Soviet-era parade in November 1990. From massed tank displays of the immediate post-war parades, to the introduction of strategic rocket systems during the ‘Khrushchev’ years, all the weapons displayed on Red Square during the Cold War are described in detail.

The background military history of the Soviet Union during the Cold War years and the philosophy involved in the weapon developments is also related, building the overall picture of Soviet parades as a projection of Soviet military might.
    Tasty Tidbits

Since the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Soviet Union and now the Russian Federation has demonstrated its latest tanks and military vehicles on Red Square for Russian domestic and foreign consumption.
The annual May and November military parades were in 1946 joined by a ‘Tankman’s Day’ parade, celebrating the day Red Army forces crossed into Axis territory in 1944.
Soviet tanks such as the T-54 had their Red Square public debut almost a decade after they entered service, while some rocket systems, although often displayed, never entered service.
One of the best locations in Moscow to watch the parade was the former US Embassy building, past which the parades moved onto Red Square, while the British Embassy overlooked the return route.
The start of the May 1960 parade was delayed while Khrushchev decided whether or not to order the shooting down of an American U-2A USAF/CIA reconnaissance aircraft flying over Siberia.
