Wars & Warriors in Scale – The 19th Century
    Theme Collection Vol.10

    Preface

This is the 10th “Theme Collections” title in our new and ongoing series that draws upon previously published articles from our Scale Model Handbook Special Editions Collection books where the content is dedicated to a specific category or period. In this latest edition we’ve gathered 12 themes on 19th Century conflicts, which have a popular following amongst the miniature figure modelling fraternity. The Napoleonic Wars stretched over the first 20 years of the 19th Century so most of the articles in this edition will present the colourful uniforms of that era. Future titles in this new series will offer carefully chosen articles, grouped together into specific themes.

Our books are produced using a high-quality digital printing process giving excellent quality illustrations on 300g matt laminated velvet paper for the covers, with 150g velvet paper inside, all ‘perfect bound’ with a special glue!

As always, thanks must go to all our contributors for their support and for sharing their secrets with us. Special thanks are due to Pietro Balloni, Luca Marchetti, Alex Vallejo, Fernando Vallejo, Alessandro Balbo, Rolando Iezzi, Darren Parker-Mead, Man Jin Kim, Taesung Harmms, Andrew Cairns, Young B. Song, Dae-Hyeong Kim, Ju Won Jung, Paul Ondeck, Yannis Papadopoulos and our English Text Editor Ken Jones.

We hope you’ll enjoy our latest edition!

    BACKCOVER TEXT
The historic events of the 19th Century have fascinated people from childhood to adulthood, as the Napoleonic Wars took place and dominated the early years of the period. The advancing lines of the infantry facing continuous musket and cannon fire was really terrifying and unbelievable, considering the account of human casualties. The colourful uniforms worn during the period are really a challenge for every modeller and military artist and here you will find a lot of different types and colours.

Within this ‘Theme Collection’ book you’ll find 12 articles by eight well-known artists who reveal their secrets for painting, sculpting and scenic creations, seven of which were originally made for Box Art Painting. All mediums are used here… Acrylics, enamels and oils, so whatever paint you prefer, you’ll find interesting ways and varied approaches to using it, and you’ll also learn a lot of new things, tips and techniques along the way.

    SCALE MODELLING MANUAL VOLUME 3

This is the third Manual in our new series about Scale Modelling where our aim is to concentrate a lot of information about painting and general modelling techniques for all modellers at a competitive retail price.
Each of our manuals covers a specific topic in detail, while offering lots of different approaches and techniques and, in most cases, written by one author. The content is carefully selected and presented so that readers should find something new to try and to add to their own techniques.
Featured in each book are high quality photos and a detailed text that the reader can easily follow the progressive assembly steps and the painting sequence for each theme, which help to adopt these new modelling techniques and different approaches.
In our previous editions the length of each theme was limited due to the number of pages taken for other content, but now there are no such limitations where everything is presented in a most detailed and explanatory way so there will be no omissions or unanswered questions.
Depending on the theme and content, real painted colour chips of the hues and mixes will be added with information on how to use them.
This series will feature various modelling aspects from Historic and Fantasy, Scale Models, Dioramas, Vignettes, Figures, Busts, Techniques and History.
In this third issue Master Artist Christos Katselos explains in detail how he painted Journeyman Miniatures’ Female Morrigan figure. “The Morrigan, Goddess of War, Fate and Death” is a full figure that comes with a detail scenic base and a lot of extra accessories in 1/24th scale (75mm). As the figure is fantasy modellers can paint it using any colour palette they wish to.
The artist used the airbrush for making a black and white sketch followed by paintbrushes to get the most from each tool. The 55 detailed step-by-step photographs with explanatory captions form the larger part of a total of 60 illustrations revealing all the secrets on how the flesh was painted with a cold hue, hair, clothes, ravens, stones, metals and all the details included in the kit. A total of 38 different acrylic paints were used; seven are liquid pigments and one metallic, from four acrylic series… Lifecolor, Vallejo Model Color, Scale75 and Kimera Kolors, with the real colour painted chips included at the end of the article. Also, he used two different primers to sketch; Badger for black and Lifecolor for white.
We must thank the following for their help: Vallejo Acrylics (Alex Vallejo and Jaume Ortiz), Scale75 (Jose Mendez), Kimera Kolors (Luca Marchetti and Pietro Balloni), Lifecolors (Alessandro Balbo and Rolando Iezzi) and Yannis Papadopoulos. Last, but not least, thanks must go to our English Text Editor Ken Jones.

Welcome to the 26th issue of “Figure Modelling” in Mr Black Publications’ Scale Model Handbook series and the 49th book we’ve published so far. Twenty six of our titles have covered figure modelling, three are about modelling dioramas, five are the popular “Modelling the Second World War” specials, a further nine are in our new “Theme Collection Special Edition Series”, two are in the “Painting Guide Series”, one in the “How to” guides, two in the “Scale Modelling Manual Series” and finally, the “Lifecolor Painting Guide Vol.1”.

This time we’ve included seven articles about figure modelling, all written by the well-known master artist Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth, which is a small tribute to him and we hope you will like it. As Ernesto paints mainly busts here, you can read how he painted seven different themes. You’ll discover how to paint different flesh shades and different materials such as leathers, wood, fabrics, helmets, weapons, the various metals (including how to use the “non-metallic metals” technique) and there’s even a fantasy subject!

In this second issue Master Artist Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth explains in detail how he painted the Airborne Miniatures Bust (ref: 908) of a 1/9th scale US Army Helicopter Crewman wearing ACU modern camouflage pattern, known to most of us as “Digital Camouflage”. The bust can also be painted with Multicam camouflage, or both Multicam Uniform and ACU equipment. The same goes for the helmet, which can be painted dark grey (almost black) or light grey. Gloves should be green.

The artist used a combination of airbrush and paintbrush to get the most of each tool. The 55 detailed Step-By-Step photographs with explanatory captions in a total of 60 illustrations revealed all the secrets on how he painted the flesh and helmet (20 photos) and the ACU camouflage and equipment (35 photos) so to get such a realistic result. The artist used a total of 51 acrylic paints (four of them metallic) and four acrylic inks with the real colour painted chips included at the end of the article. A quick guide on How to Airbrush acrylics using a double action airbrush and a steady airflow compressor concludes the contents of the manual. Read about the common problems that we confront when airbrushing water based acrylics and how to easily solve them.

Inside you’ll discover how he painted a realistic looking head with acrylics using the artist’s Planar Face Painting System… Or “painting by numbers” if that’s a more familiar term to you, and a realistic WWII Uniform in exquisite detail. The innovation here is that every possible effort has been made to include the paints of many of the companies producing acrylic colours especially for brush painting miniatures. Herein we have the exact matches of equivalent (or similar) colours, or the Editor’s suggestions for approximate colours, hues and mixes, to achieve the same excellent results as the Artist.

We have used and tested the 10 series of paints of participating companies AK-Interactive (3rd Generation and Old Figure Series), Andrea Miniatures, Vallejo Acrylics (Model Color and Panzer Aces), Scale75 (Scalecolor, Warfront and Artist), Jo Sonja, Kimera Kolors and Lifecolor.

    SCALE MODELLING MANUAL VOLUME 1

This is the first Manual in our new series about Scale Modelling where our aim is to bring a lot of concentrated information about painting and general modelling techniques for all modellers at a competitive retail price.

Each manual will deal with a specific topic in detail, offering a lot of different approaches and techniques and in most cases written by one author. The contents will be carefully selected and presented in a way that every reader should find something new to try and to adapt to their own methods. Each book will have high quality photos and a detailed text so the reader will easily follow the progress of the assembly and painting of each theme, to help adopt new modelling techniques and different approaches.

In our other editions the length of each theme was limited due to the number of pages taken for other contents, but here there are no such limitations. Each theme will be presented in a most detailed and explanatory way so there will be no omissions or unanswered questions.

Depending on the themes and contents, real painted colour chips of hues and mixes will be added with information on how to use them. In this series we will include various modelling aspects from Historic and Fantasy, Scale Models, Dioramas, Vignettes, Figures, Busts, Techniques and History You Can Model.

In this first issue we’ll cover a part of the Deutsches Afrika Korps Forces in Scale by presenting Lieven Terryn’s ‘Siege of Tobruk 1941’ Super Diorama, a Detailed Figure Painting with oils of an Alpine Miniatures Leutnant of the 8th Panzer Regiment in Libya 1941 and an article by Mr Black’s Team on Acrylic Relevant Colour Sets for DAK Uniforms and How to Use Them.

We must thank the following: AK-Interactive (Fernando Vallejo), Andrea Miniatures (Alexandra Fernandez), Vallejo Acrylics (Alex Vallejo), Scale75 (Jose Mendez), Kimera Colors (Luca Marchetti & Pietro Balloni), Lifecolors (Alessandro Balbo & Rolando Iezzi), Yannis Papadopoulos and last, but not least, our English Text Editor Ken Jones.

Special thanks must go to Lieven Terryn who provided us with all the necessary material so this first book could be released as a printed work.

    HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

On 11th April 1941 German and Italian troops surrounded the port of Tobruk, a Libyan city on the eastern Mediterranean coast near the border with Egypt, and placed the British and Commonwealth troops occupying it under siege. Only a few months earlier in February, Generalleutnant Rommel had arrived in Tripoli with the first units of the Deutsche Afrika Korps and launched an offensive into Cyrenaica, Libya, which the British had taken from the Italians at the beginning of the war in North Africa. Soon Rommel launched his first assault to capture the port. German troops managed to breach the Tobruk perimeter on 13th April, but after this initial success they were beaten back by the British garrison with considerable losses. On the evening of 30th April, a second major attack was launched by Axis troops assisted by 70 tanks. They managed to breach the perimeter a second time, but once again the attack failed with the loss of over 1,000 men. Over the next few months the British went back onto the offensive launching several operations and eight months later the siege was finally lifted and Tobruk was liberated on 10th December 1941.

    THEME COLLECTION VOLUME 9

Painting Busts From Diverse Periods Of History Using Different Mediums…

Brand New Content – Eight Articles Published For The First Time!

    Preface
This is the ninth title in our ongoing “Theme Collections” series, but it’s a title with a difference in that it features all new articles, published for the first time and all dedicated to painting busts. In this latest edition we’ve gathered together eight busts as subjects from various periods of history – Ancient and Medieval Times, The French Revolution and World War Two and all are painted by talented Master Artists.

The first article is a Medieval Crossbowman by Sergey Popovichenko who explains in detail how to begin working with miniature busts. Sergey offers 57 photos to cover the necessary information that modellers of all skill levels can follow to produce a successful result. He also shows how to accomplish the best possible end result following his step-by-step painting sequences of mixed media techniques with acrylics and oils.

The second feature is by well-known master artist James Rice and dedicated to a bust of the French Revolution period where he explains how to adopt the Verdaccio undercoat technique specifically to busts. There are 39 photos illustrating this feature, which are more than enough and where everyone can follow James’ step-by-step painting techniques using acrylics and oils.

Louis D’ Orio a master of oil painting miniatures returns with a dual bust painting feature from Ancient times using his method of oil painting techniques. A detailed text accompanies the excellent quality photos of Dienekes and Hydarnes.

Joachim Peiper, a German SS officer from WW2 is next, painted by the well-known master artist Christos Katselos. Christos gives some in-depth information for eyes and face painting with more than 20 step-by-step photos. All areas of the bust have detailed paint mixes and details on how to apply them.

Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth, another of our regular contributors, offers two WW2 subjects; RAF Bomber Command aircrew and a German Fallschirmjäger Feldgendarmerie with his master class method of painting. He explains everything in his detailed text and all the painting mixes are included so readers can easily paint their own versions.

The seventh article is a Soviet RKKA Scout painted by Toshihiro Sano using Tamiya Enamels. This four-page article is an excellent reference for painting the Soviet Leaf Pattern camouflage.

Well-known master artist Eduardo Fernandez Rodriguez contributes an eight-page article on painting a Soviet Partisan bust. He explains how to paint flesh, leather, fur skin, wood, metals and much more with acrylics.

As always, thanks must go to all our contributors for their support and for sharing their secrets with us. Special thanks are also due to Pietro Balloni, Luca Marchetti, Alex Vallejo, Darren Parker-Mead, Man Jin Kim, Fernando Vallejo, Taesung Harmms, Young B. Song, Dae-Hyeong Kim, Ju Won Jung, Paul Ondeck, Alessandro Balbo, Rolando Lezzi, Yannis Papadopoulos and finally to Ken Jones our English Text Editor.

    Back Cover

Traditional busts (we now call V busts) first appeared in kit form on the commercial model market around 40 years ago. We can say that Verlinden and Young Miniatures were the easiest to find in shops and shows back then, but very soon a lot of other companies added this category to their ranges. At first these miniature busts, were not so popular as most modellers preferred full body scale figures. Gradually, however, the sculpting and casting quality improved and busts attracted more fans, and nowadays the genre has numerous followers all over the world.

Miniature busts and half-figures produced in various scales allowed sculptors, and subsequently figure painters, to concentrate on detailing the face, transferring facial expressions and character, and adding personality. The larger scales, usually 1:9 or 1:10, also allowed for some impressive and exquisite detailing on the figure and accessories… For example, an ornate helmet could be given far more detailing and the benefits of added fittings that would not be possible on smaller scale miniatures.

Making your bust painting a success story will make any other miniature figure painting easier. Study the work of some of the best master artists in the world herein, where with the help of 170 photos you’ll improve your next painted work and progress to achieve the highest standards possible.

    WWII SPECIAL VOL.5 SUMMARY

SCULPTING & PAINTING YOUR OWN WWII GERMAN MINIATURE FIGURES IN 1/35 & 1/16 SCALES – CREATING YOUR SCENIC SETTINGS FROM SCRATCH

THE MINIATURE FIGURE ART OF LUC KLINKERS

Welcome to the latest WWII Special, Vol.5 in the Scale Model Handbook Series from Mr Black Publications’ Editions. This is our 42st book by the well-known Netherlands’ artist Luc Klinkers who shows “how to” sculpt and paint WWII period miniature figures in German uniforms, placing them in realistic scenic settings, made from scratch and providing the ultimate techniques guide.

Luc steers you through the miniaturists’ magical world using detailed text with a lot of step-by-step photos so you can easily follow his approach and learn how to sculpt your own WWII German miniature figures in 1/35 and 1/16 scales, displaying them on scratch built scenery.

Inside are 250 photos, around 200 of them combined into step-by-step sequences. The book is divided into five chapters following a progressively advanced sequence from A to Z on how to sculpt your own miniatures. Luc reveals all his secrets and techniques gathered over his 20 years experience in the military modelling hobby where he’s sculpted more than 200 figures.

The first chapter is dedicated to tools, materials and other materials needed to sculpt your own miniature figures. The second covers creating a 1/35 scale three-figure vignette totally from scratch. The author uses heads, hands, boots, weapons and accessories from commercially available products combining them to create his personalised realistically posed figures. Luc makes it look easy and encourages you to try his methods.

The third chapter is about sculpting and painting a German SS Grenadier at the Falaise Pocket 1944 in 1/16 scale, whereas the fourth chapter covers the creation of a 1/16 scale three-figure “action vignette” from scratch. The fifth and the final chapter presents a gallery of masterly sculpted figures that have been created over the past 20 years that were placed onto AFVs, in city or country themes, or just in small display bases.

So what would you expect from this book? I must admit that I first met Luc on Facebook one day when some photos of his latest work appeared in front of me. I was really impressed! Not only from the results he achieved, but also from the time he took from start to finish. An amazing combination! Yes, he uses commercially available heads, hands, boots, weapons, gear, etc., when they fit into his projects to create shortcuts. However, I think the final results are awesome, considering the time dedicated to sculpting your own 1/35 scale heads, hands, weapons, etc., is very time consuming with underlying uncertainties for the amateur. Also, the larger 1/16 scale needs a lot of attention to detail and abilities usually displayed by professionals.

Luc explains how to sculpt your own miniature figures using regular tools and materials, combing your creativity and readily available commercial accessories, so each figure will have your own signature upon it. We often hear that with just replacing a figure’s head we can give it a different personality and progress to adding some character to your scenic base.

Study this book carefully and get out your old figures and spares box that’s been sitting there for years. Start with small alterations and then go further to producing conversions and scratch builds. You will be amazed how good you will feel when you put your own stamp on your sculpted and transformed figures!

A big thank you must go to this great miniaturist Luc Klinkers for giving us the opportunity to publish his work and share his secrets with us. Special thanks are due to Pietro Balloni, Luca Marchetti, Alex Vallejo, Fernando Vallejo, Taesung Harmms, Young B. Song, Paul Ondeck, Alessandro Balbo, Ronaldo Iezzi, Yannis Papadopoulos and last, but not least, our English Text Editor Ken Jones.

  • Storming the bombers. A Chronicle of JG 4 Vol. 1 1942-1944

    LUGA JG 4/I

    49,90

The fourth fighter wing of the Luftwaffe was initially established during 1942 and committed to operations in defence of the Rumanian oil fields during 1943. I./JG 4 first saw action in combat against a strike force of B-24 Liberators dispatched on the celebrated low level attack against Ploesti on 1 August 1943, Operation “Tidal Wave”. JG 4 was subsequently deployed in the bitterly fought German defensive campaign on the Italian peninsula during the first half of 1944, prior to being shifted to the Normandy invasion front and then falling back to the frontiers of the Reich in September that year. It was during the summer of 1944 that JG 4 underwent considerable reinforcement with two new Gruppen swelling its ranks. The most effective of these was II. (Sturm)/JG 4, a so-called “Storm” or « assault » wing, built up around a hard core of former Sturmstaffel 1 pilots and an intake of young daredevil volunteers. Committed against the massive USAF bomber fleets pounding the Reich, these German « kamikaze » fighters, as some saw them, were deployed to bring down the American bombers by any means, including ramming if necessary. The first volume of this two part history covers the unit’s establishment, deployments and combat actions through to Autumn 1944, providing for the first time in English a day-by-day, mission-by-mission study of the Luftwaffe’s 4th fighter wing.

The second volume covers the story of the Geschwader from Operation Market Garden in Holland during September 1944 to the final desperate battles over Berlin and capitulation in May 1945. The combats flown by the pilots of JG 4 throughout this nine month period are related with the aid of rare oral testimony and illustrated with photographs from private albums, including a selection of new images for this English-language edition. Covered in detail are the ‘Storm’ missions flown by the Sturmgruppe (including ramming attacks against USAAF bombers), ground-attack bombing sorties during the Ardennes offensive of December 1944, the fullest account yet of the unit’s participation in the 1945 New Year’s Day Operation Bodenplatte, the last desperate sorties flown on the Oder front against the Red Army with, for the first time, accounts in English of German kamikaze attacks flown against the Oder bridges and the final air battles over the ruins of Berlin.

Over the course of 20 years research the author was able to track down and interview virtually every surviving pilot and compile their very often moving and desperate accounts into this book, giving it a uniquely human dimension which will undoubtedly be of interest to all former Allied aviators and their descendants as well as enthusiasts of the period.

Neil Page has produced the translation and his knowledge of both the French and German languages as well as WWII aviation history has enabled us to present this superb English language edition. The work is illustrated with several hundred photographs and is completed with loss and victory listings, a table of commanding officers and Thierry Dekker’s superb full-colour profile artworks. This is an unmissable 232-page A-4 format hardback, with much new information on WWII air combat over Europe, the pilots and their machines.

  • In the Skies of France. A Chronicle of JG 2

    LUGA JG 2/I

    49,90

It has taken more than 60 years for this first detailed history of the second fighter wing of the Luftwaffe to appear, a chronicle of Jagdgeschwader 2. Conducting operations principally over France and the Channel, JG 2 was destined to become one of the most celebrated of German fighter units, accorded extensive coverage by the propaganda services of the Reich. Awarded the honour title « Richthofen » as early as 1935, JG 2 spearheaded the campaign in the West and the assault againt England in the Battle of Britain. The unit remained in France when the majority of German fighter units were dispatched eastwards for the invasion of Russia during the spring of 1941. Tasked with defending the airspace of Brittany, Normandy and much of Picardy along the French Channel coastline, JG 2 constituted a bulwark against the incursions of the RAF and USAF. Despite the unit’s heavy losses sustained during WW II, the authors managed to locate around one hundred JG 2 veterans and their personal accounts and photographs bring this history vividly to life and imbue it with a human dimension which many will find moving. This first volume of the history of JG 2 covers the early years of the unit from its origins to the turn of the year 1940/1941.
Compiling a history of this scope would have been an impossible task were it not for the support of many tens of veterans and their families, amateur historians, enthusiasts and friends. We owe a special debt of gratitude to five former members of JG “Richthofen” who were particularly supportive during the long process of assembling this work and whose encouragement and readiness to assist was unswerving: Julius Meimberg and Erich Rudorffer for kindly agreeing to write their respective forewords, Hennig Strümpell, Wolfgang Falck and Dr Siegfried Bethke. It was with great sadness that we learnt of the deaths of the latter three gentlemen before this work could appear.

A number of French researchers have supported this project with their time, energy and considerable knowledge and experience. We would particularly like to thank Richard Goyat and his co-author Jean-Yves Lorant, as well as Frédéric Quesnel.

We extend grateful thanks to the following veterans and to the families of those former members of JG 2 who are no longer with us (F) : Altstidl J., Armbruster F. (F), Arnim v. A. • Scale Model Handbook: How To Guides Vol.1 Techniques for Modelling Female Miniatures

The Publisher’s Introduction To “How To Guides” Volume 1

At Mr Black Publications we’ve recently completed the first in a new series of “How to Guides” resulting in this first volume… It’s the 41st Scale Model Handbook we’ve published to date.

We’re very excited about this new series of books, which will cover the many techniques need to make better models! We’ll cover a lot of the popular subjects in this great hobby of scale modelling, and this first volume by Christos Katselos shows how to paint female miniature figures and busts, revealing all his secrets on how he paints female miniature figures. There are 11 chapters in this book where you’ll find all the necessary information for the preparation, assembly and painting of female figures, using the latest techniques and tools. The book offers nine themes; five in great detail with a lot of step-by-step pictures over eight pages, plus the introduction, preparation and assembly, aimed specifically at newcomers.

All of the painting was done using acrylic paints from the well-known Spanish company, Vallejo Acrylics. Christos used about 65 different colours – 54 “Model Color”, seven “Panzer Aces”, one “Model Air”, three “Game Color” and one “Metal Color” to add a variety of colours for painting and to lessen any repetition.

The first 52 pages are devoted to a lot of step-by-step projects with around 195 illustrations enabling the reader to easily understand and follow the sequences. The remainder of the book has another four articles with more photos of finished models with the necessary descriptive texts.

A big thank you must go to Christos Katselos, a great artist, for giving us the opportunity to publish his work and share his secrets. Special thanks are also due, in no particular order, to Pietro Balloni, Luca Marchetti, Alex Vallejo, Darren Parker-Mead, Man Jin Kim, Alexey Lucanev, Fernando Vallejo, Taesung Harmms, Andrew Cairns, Young B. Song, Dae-Hyeong Kim, Ju Won Jung, Paul Ondeck, Sang-Eon Lee, Yannis Papadopoulos and last, but not least, our English Text Editor Ken Jones.

    Red Machines 2: SU-100 Self-Propelled Gun book

The Red Machines Series is devoted to the hardware of the Red Army. Each book offers in-depth information, much of it new to the west, as well as a large number of photos, of which most are unpublished. Each book includes blueprints, drawings, colour profiles and data tables, to describe the development and production variants of each vehicle.

The SU-100 was the Red Army’s most powerful medium tank destroyer of World War 2 and was developed for anti-tank fire support to the T-34-85 in the same way as the SU-85 had complemented the original T-34. As with the SU-85 before it, the SU-100 was delayed in entering service.

Although introduced late in the war, the SU-100 was heavily engaged in the final push into the Axis countries, with major combat engagements in Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and in the assault on Berlin. The SU-100 proved a particularly potent “Zveroboi” or “animal hunter” in that it could easily dispatch Tiger, King Tiger and Panther tanks at medium range. The vehicle had no secondary armament, however, and proved vulnerable when engaged in close fighting without infantry support as occurred during some of these late war battles.

Post-war, the SU-100 remained in Soviet Army service for many years, being subject to several capital repair upgrades over the decades. The SU-100 was also exported in large numbers, particularly to the Middle East, and was produced under licence in Czechoslovakia as the SD-100.

    About the Authors

James Kinnear was born in the UK in 1959. James has researched Russian military hardware following his first visit to the Soviet Union in 1973. Since then he has written hundreds of articles on Soviet and Russian military technology. A Russian speaker, he has studied the subject from within the military-intelligence community and as a civilian author.

Nikolai Polikarpov is the chief editor of “M-Hobby”, the first and only Russian monthly magazine for military modellers, which has been in publication since 1993. The founding of the magazine was a natural extension of his hobby of building scale models. The desire to build models which were an exact replica of the original full-scale prototypes naturally led to the study of the development and operational history of military vehicles during World War Two, including archive research and the measurement of preserved museums examples. This led to the publication of numerous reference articles in “M-Hobby”, and also a series of Russian books and monographs regarding the history of Soviet combat and transport vehicles. The publishing of books and articles led to membership of the Union of Journalists of Russia and ongoing work in popularizing military history in various publications.

    DIORAMA MODELLING 3

“The Diorama Art – Between History and Myth” by Vasilis Triantafyllou

Welcome to “Diorama Modelling 3” in Mr Black Publications’ Scale Model Handbook Series, third in a series written by Master Modeller Vasilis Triantafyllou that includes five different creations. “The Diorama Art – Between History and Myth” by Vasilis Triantafyllou is perhaps the most impressive and complete version in our Diorama Modelling series and we are very pleased to have the opportunity to release this edition, featuring five award-winning creations made almost entirely from scratch. Within the 100 pages of this book, the five creations between “History & Myth” are presented in a glamorous and illustrative way that we know will command your attention.

I met Vasilis for the first time a few years ago and was lucky enough to admire his work, “The Black Pearl Treasure” at the IPMS show in Greece. His creations are truly breath taking and perhaps no recordings or photographs of them would not fully create the emotions that would fill the viewer when discovering them “in the flesh” for the first time, but the reader will have the chance to admire and learn the secrets of a Master of The Diorama Art.

“The Holy Lake” is the first feature in 54mm scale and has been developed intermittently. Here are presented in detail innovative manufacturing and painting techniques and unique construction materials have been used. The result is impressive as well as the study and work that was done before any construction began. Similar techniques have been followed in the other dioramas and emphasize the diversity of each one.

“The Caribbean Village” at 54mm is the second theme of the book, presenting several new elements and additions to the creative techniques that were used earlier in the first theme.

The third theme is “The Castle” in 75mm scale with some stunning elements that carry you back to 17th century Europe.

“The Black Pearl Treasure” is the fourth, and perhaps one of the most impressive subjects we’ve ever seen in the 75mm scale.

“The Retreat 1812” is purely a historical Shadow Box diary in which many 54mm figures have been used. The despair and destruction experienced by Napoleon’s soldiers is expressed on their faces and the artist manages to convey strong emotions to the viewer.

In closing, I must first of all thank the artist and writer of this amazing work, Vasilis Triantafyllou, and his son Dimitris Triantafyllou who edited the photographs… Thanks are also due to Christos Katselos for his excellent English translation and our tireless English proof editor Ken Jones. The promotion and completion of this project would not have been possible without Zacharias Andriopoulos’ help.

I hope you enjoy our latest addition to the Diorama Modelling Series!

    WWII SPECIAL VOL.4

This volume is the 35th edition in Mr Black Publications’ “Scale Model Handbook” series, and the fourth in that series entirely dedicated to what took place between 1939-1945, which has since been described in Western histories as “The Second World War”.

The wartime themes herein are numerous and feature extended articles about models, dioramas, vignettes and figures, especially in 1/35 scale, where we’ve managed to assemble many representative examples from our well-known regular contributors, who’ve been with us from the beginning. We’ve added some articles from newer and very talented modellers that we feel will interest our readers. Our thanks go to everyone for their excellent work and dedication, which helped achieve this project… Our new contributors are Lieven Terryn, Eduardo Fernandez Rodriguez, Fabrizio Marini and Carlos Muñoz de Bustillo. As always, thanks are due to our regular and well-known stalwarts, Selu Casanova, Ernesto Reyes Stalhuth and Toshihiro Sano.

We must also thank our friends, partners and supporters from the manufacturing fraternity… Pietro Balloni and Luca Marchetti (Pegaso Models), Darren Parker-Mead (Tommy’s War), Stuart Hale (Stormtrooper Miniatures), Alexander Surzhenko (Masterbox Ltd), Alexey Lukanev (Irbis Miniatures), Man Jin Kim (MJ Miniatures), Young B. Song (Young Miniatures), Taesung Harmms (Alpine Miniatures), Daniel Buchtela (Model Scene), DG Artwork (Dae Hyoung Kim), Alex Vallejo (Vallejo Acrylics), Fernando Vallejo (AK-Interactive), Ben Mirson and Alina Rizhko (both from Miniart Models).

Finally, we extend our thanks to Ken Jones for his valuable help in editing our contributors’ texts, which have to be translated into English from the many different languages within our worldwide contributor base. His knowledge and advice help us lend a unique final touch to all our publications.

Hopefully you’ll enjoy our new book, but above all, keep modelling!
