The Lancia Stratos was developed as the world’s first purpose built machine and was born as an innovative midship machine with front and rear FRP cowls.
The power competition of the 1970s rally intensified year by year, and in order to win, high athletic performance and a lightweight and compact machine were required.
Lancia has abandoned the idea of building a rally machine based on a commercial car so far, and Stratos has been developed only for the purpose of winning the WRC title for the first time in the world.
In November 1970 Bertone unveiled the original Stratos at the Turin Show, and in November 1971 presented Lancia with a second prototype car with a mid-engined layout .
The following year, while prototyping, I participated in various events and proceeded with aging before participating in the WRC.
Production of Stratos started in October 1973, and Group 4 homologation was acquired in October 1974, and immediately debuted at the WRC Round 5 Sanremo Rally.
