From 1987, when the World Rally Championship (WRC) came to be dominated by Group A machines, to 1991, Lancia had won the Makes title for five consecutive years and debuted the Delta HF Integrale, a significantly improved version of the Delta Integrale 16V. In 1992, Lancia was aiming for another WRC championship, and at its debut race in Monte Carlo, Lancia won the opening round of the 1992 World Rally Championship for the fifth time in the Delta. In the fifth round of the Tour de Corse Rally, tarmac specialists Dedier Oriol and Bernard Ossery, who were wearing car number 3, led from start to finish at a high pace, setting the best time in 18 of the 23 special stages. It was his fourth Tour de Corse victory in one year. Lancia continued to put the competition to shame, finishing 1-2 in the 1,000-lake rally and winning the 1992 Makeshift Championship, a feat of strength that was to last six years in a row.

En 1992, Lancia aspiraba a otro campeonato WRC, y en su carrera debut en Montecarlo, Lancia ganó la primera ronda del Campeonato del Mundo de Rallyes de 1992 por quinta vez en el Delta. En la quinta prueba del Rally Tour de Corse, los especialistas en asfalto Dedier Oriol y Bernard Ossery, que llevaban el coche número 3, lideraron de principio a fin a un gran ritmo, marcando el mejor tiempo en 18 de las 23 especiales.
