The IJN’s Zuikaku was the ideal aircraft carrier at the time of the Pacific War, with a good balance of speed, loading capacity and defensive capability, etc. She was planned in 1937 when the Washington Disarmament Treaty expired and completed in September 1941, just before the war began. The Zuikaku, together with her sister ship, the Shōkaku, was assigned to the 5th Air Squadron and took part in the attack on Pearl Harbour on 8 December 1941, where she had a brilliant first battle, with all the aircraft returning with great success. In October 1944, she fought until the end of her life in the Battle of Leyte, the last battle of the Allied Fleet.
