During the African campaign the British used some Stuart tanks deprived of their turrets as troop carriers or as artillery tractors. It was later that, to make up for the shortage of armoured vehicles, Canadian General Guy Simonds ordered the field workshops to remove the cannon from old M7 Priest self-propelled vehicles and convert them into infantry transport vehicles. The success of this operation soon spread among all Commonwelth troops and soon every obsolete tank was converted into a Kangaroo, the name given to this type of conversion, which allowed the transport of fully equipped soldiers in combat gear directly to the front line. Defensive armament could vary according to availability with Browning .50-calibre or .30-calibre machine guns up to the Boys anti-tank gun.

Durante la campaña africana, los británicos utilizaron algunos tanques Stuart desprovistos de sus torretas como vehículos de transporte de tropas o como tractores de artillería. Más tarde, para paliar la escasez de vehículos blindados, el general canadiense Guy Simonds ordenó a los talleres de campaña que retiraran el cañón de los viejos vehículos autopropulsados M7 Priest y los convirtieran en vehículos de transporte de infantería.
