Probably the most famous fighter of World War II was the German Messerschmitt Bf 109.
Designed in the spring of 1940, the Bf 109F was one of the best in its class. It had a more powerful DB 601E engine and seriously improved aerodynamics.
Since March 1941, Bf 109F2 fighter jets have been manufactured, which were armed with a 15mm MG 151/15 cannon. In June 1941, the Bf 109F4 modification with 20mm MG 151/20 was adopted, reinforced with armor and other improvements.
On aircraft modifications Bf 109F4z / Trop, produced since August 1941, installed dust filters, as well as a system for increasing engine power GM 1.
The Bf 109F became the main Luftwaffe fighters during the launch of Operation Barbarossa. They participated in hot air battles from the Kola Peninsula to the Crimea. Since the fall of 1941, the Bf 109F began to be used in North Africa. The famous German aces – V. Melders, G. Luttsov, G. Trautloft, G. Marsail and many others were sitting in the cockpits of these aircraft.
