CR. 42CN, WWII Italian Night Fighter 1/32

The Fiat CR.42 Falco (“Falcon”) is a single-seat sesquiplane fighter developed and produced by Italian aircraft manufacturer Fiat Aviazione. It served primarily in Italy’s Regia Aeronautica both before and during the Second World War.

The CR.42 was an evolutionary design of Fiat’s earlier CR.32 fighter, featuring a more powerful supercharged Fiat A.74R1C.38 air-cooled radial engine and aerodynamic improvements to its relatively clean exterior surfaces. The aircraft proved to be relatively agile in flight, a factor that had been attributed to its very low wing loading and a sometimes decisive tactical advantage. RAF Intelligence praised its exceptional maneuverability, further noting that “the plane was immensely strong”, though it was technically outclassed by faster, more heavily armed monoplanes. While primarily used as a fighter, various other roles were adopted for some variants of the type, such as the CR.42CN dedicated night fighter model.

CR.42CN – Night interceptor to repel bomber attacks. Equipped with searchlights on outer wing and a wind-powered electricity generator located above the upper wing. The exhaust tailpipes of the aircraft are equipped with flame arrestors.

El Fiat CR.42 Falco (“Falcon”) es un caza sesquiplano monoplaza desarrollado y producido por el fabricante de aviones italiano Fiat Aviazione. Sirvió principalmente en la Regia Aeronautica de Italia tanto antes como durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

El CR.42 fue un diseño evolutivo del anterior caza CR.32 de Fiat, con un motor radial Fiat A.74R1C.38 sobrealimentado más potente y refrigerado por aire y mejoras aerodinámicas en sus superficies exteriores relativamente limpias. El avión demostró ser relativamente ágil en vuelo, un factor que se había atribuido a su carga alar muy baja y a una ventaja táctica a veces decisiva. RAF Intelligence elogió su excepcional maniobrabilidad, y señaló además que “el avión era inmensamente fuerte”, aunque técnicamente fue superado por monoplanos más rápidos y más fuertemente armados. Si bien se usa principalmente como caza, se adoptaron varios otros roles para algunas variantes del tipo, como el modelo de caza nocturno dedicado CR.42CN.

CR.42CN – Interceptor nocturno para repeler ataques de bombarderos. Equipado con reflectores en el ala exterior y un generador de energía eólica ubicado sobre el ala superior. Los tubos de escape de la aeronave están equipados con apagallamas.
